Mwani Qatar (Qatar Ports Management Company) announced the launch of first direct ship service to Hamad Port. The announcement was made with the arrival of a ship, which is a part of Ocean Alliance, the largest container shipping alliance in the world.
‘CMA CGM Uruguay’ container ship, is the first vessel to sail on the new service. Ocean Alliance has a total 350 container vessel fleet and a carrying capacity of 3.5mn TEUs. The new service will encourage Qatar’s foreign trade, increase volume of container handling.
It will also allow the country to transform into a regional trading hub by which the revenues can be maximised from the non-oil sector.
“We are pleased to announce the launch of the new direct service of Ocean Alliance, the world’s largest container shipping alliance, which will undoubtedly serve the national economy and contribute to achieve the goals set by our wise leadership to promote Hamad Port and transform Qatar into a regional trading hub,” said Captain Abdulla al-Khanji, Mwani Qatar chief executive officer.
The new line coming up in less than three months between Hamad Port and Shanghai in China reduces the transit time from 30 to 14 days.

Hamad Port expects about 19 containership of the same size from the Ocean Alliance in the next few months.
