Carlyle Smith, a social worker visited a rather strange family. Sharen and Michael Gravelle lived in a remote area near the woods. They asked the social worker to visit them so they could ask for some help. Feeding and caring for 11 kids was definitely not an easy task.
However, when Carlyle visited their home, he realized that something wasn’t right.
Sharen ordered all the kids to leave the house and go play in the yard. When one of them came in to use the bathroom, she told him to “go upstairs and lock yourself in your cage until tomorrow afternoon.”
Sharen referred to the kids as monkeys, and the father felt like guiding these kids to the Promised Land.
The couple was proud of their behavior and took Carlyle to show him the cages where the kids slept.
Apparently, the cages had an alarm system and he could figure out which kid tried to get out because their fingers would be wounded by the fence.
“I thought these kids were taken care of by monsters,” explained Carlyle.
Carlyle called his supervisor and mentioned everything he just witnessed.
That call set off a chain of events that dragged on for two years before the police intervened. One of the officers who investigated the case clearly remembers the smell of urine and sweat that infused in their home. The conditions were disgraceful.
When the investigation was over, the children were taken away from the couple. Sharen and Michael were convicted of child abuse and sentenced to two years in prison.
The kids however, are all grown up now but they hadn’t gotten a chance to meet their savior. Their reunion was a heartwarming, teary-eyed affair. Carlyle, Abba and Simon were completely overcome with emotion.
