Yugoslavian performance artist Marina Abramovic got her fame through the video of her silent reunion with her former lover, Frank Uwe “Ulay” Laysiepen.
She stages thought-provoking interactive installations for at least 40 years now.
Her performances have a lasting impact, and her recent performance is still being talked about. She staged a performance called “Rhythm 0” at Studio Morra in Naples, Italy.
Here, Abramovic would stand still for at least six hours and let people do anything they wanted to her by using one of 72 objects that she would place on a table.
She stood in the middle of a room with a board that had these instructions written down:
There are 72 objects on the table that one can use on me as desired.
I am the object.
During this period I take full responsibility.
Duration: 6 hours (8 pm – 2 am)
The objects on the table were those of pleasure as well as destruction. There were other harmless objects as well, like feathers and flowers. Knifes, razor blades and a loaded gun were among the objects.
Some people turned her around, someone thrust her arms into the air, and some touched her and groped her.
People removed her clothes by using razor blades and the same razor blades were bused to explore her skin. There were minor sexual assaults and she was so committed that she wouldn’t have resisted a rape or murder.
Abramovic’s side of what the people did to her was devastating.
She revealed that she felt raped, they cut off the clothes, they stuck her with thorns of rose in the stomach, aimed a gun to her head.
Some men undressed her and groped her.
After six hours, when she started to walk among the people, they didn’t even look her in the eye.
