Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte is once again in the news after his latest trip to South Korea. Duterte invited a woman to the stage while speaking on June 3, who was in Seoul for three days for a meeting with Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) community.
The president convinced the lady, who was married to a Korean, to kiss him on the lips. The surprised crowd started to cheer for Duterte.
In fact, the president had invited two Philippine women to join him on the stage and gave them a free copy of the book titled, ‘Altar of Secrets: Sex, Politics, and Money in the Philippine Catholic Church.
After that he hugged one woman and kissed her on the cheek. He then looked towards the other woman and asked her for a kiss on the lips. The lady was visibly excited to be standing next Duterte. The president then leaned forwards and the two kissed on the lips.
The woman identified as Bea Kim, defended the act and said that it had no malice. However, not all those who saw are convinced with her explanation. They saw it as a sexist and misogynistic behaviour from Duterte.
Women’s Rights group Gabriela is one of those who slammed the president’s behaviour. She said in a statement:
“His repeated acts of machismo are meant as entertainment to hide the reality of his rapidly slipping popularity due to the issues of extrajudicial killings, the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion law and big-time corruption scandals now plaguing his rule.”
Meanwhile, Philippine senator Lisa Hontiveros, hoped that people would take it light and won’t judge the woman. However, she was not happy with the president though, she said: “President Duterte acted like a feudal king who thinks that being the president is an entitlement to do anything that he pleases.”
